WhatsApp, which is one of the most popular messaging platforms available for mobile devices, will cease to operate on three major mobile devices from today due to an update
WhatsApp will shut down on three major mobile devices from today.
The popular messaging app has over two billion users across the globe but a number of them will be blocked from using the app on their device.
Due to upgrades with the app, it will no longer be compatible on three devices as WhatsApp has decided to drop them, the Irish Sun has reported.
“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates,” WhatsApp explained.
“Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users.
“These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.
“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.”
Certain iPhone models will no longer be able to support WhatsApp, with users being unable to send or receive messages or calls. From Monday the 5th, only iOS version 15.1 and newer will be supported.
This means that some dated iPhone models that are too old to use new versions of iOS won’t be able to use WhatsApp anymore.
These are:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
It comes as a warning was recently issued to those who use WhatsApp on their computer, as they need to be on alert for a potentially dangerous hack.
If you’re using an older version of the app on your Windows PC, you need to check your version and update it as soon as possible.
Failing to do so could leave your personal data wide open to theft due to a vulnerability in the app, which could let hackers run something known as arbitrary code, all hidden within seemingly innocent attachments.
If an arbitrary code attack is successful, it can give cyber criminals unauthorised access or even full control of your devices.
WhatsApp explained: “A spoofing issue in WhatsApp for Windows prior to version 2.2450.6 displayed attachments according to their MIME type but selected the file opening handler based on the attachment’s filename extension.
